Abstract

According to the International Council On Systems Engineering (INCOSE), there are presently four systems engineering standards in various stages of development. Often, these standards redefine the systems engineering process with different language and scope. This can easily lead to a dilemma for managers and developers who strive to be compliant with one standard and yet remain uncertain as to what degree they might be compliant with a second. This paper explores a mapping between the engineering process objectives for the Carnegie-Mellon Systems Engineer- ing/Software Engineering Integrated Capability Maturity Model (CMMI-SE/SW, version 1.02) and the technical processes for the International Organization for Standardization/ International Electrotechnical Commission Life Cycle Management – System Life Cycle Processes (ISO/IEC 15288, CD 2). Through this mapping, it has been ascertained that 29 of the 52 total engineering process objectives defined in the CMMI-SE/SW map directly to the technical processes in ISO/IEC 15288 (56%). In addition, 16 are partially mapped (30%) and 7 did not map at all (14%).
