Use, Relationships: A DoD Handbook will be used as a guidance document that enhances user awareness by providing engineering information; lessons learned; possible options to address technical issues; classification of similar items, materials, or processes; interpretative direction and techniques; and any other type of guidance information that may help the Government or its contractors in the design, construction, selection, management, support, or operation of systems, products, processes or services.
This Data Item Description contains the content and format preparation instructions for DoD handbooks and their associated documents that are described in the following paragraphs of MIL-STD-967. Only those documents listed below will be required when specified individually on contract.

Introduction

Requirements:
1. Reference documents. The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including their dates and dates of any applicable notices and revisions, shall be as specified in the contract.
2. Format and content. Format and content for DoD Handbooks shall be as follows:
a. DoD Handbooks. Format and content of DoD Handbooks shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-967, paragraphs 4.1 through 5.12.
b. DoD Handbook Revisions. Format and content of DoD Handbook Revisions shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-967, paragraph 5.13.
c. DoD Handbook Changes. Format and content of DoD Handbook Changes shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-967, paragraphs 5.14 through 5.14.8.
