7.1 This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format, Content and preparation instructions for the data products resulting form work tasks describe in 5.3.2 and 5.3.4 of MIL-STD-973.
7.2 This DID is applicable to system/equipment development contracts containing requirements for implementation/ extension of contract work breakdown structures and requirements for configuration identification.

3. Description / Purpose
3.1 Configuration Item (CI) Documentation Recommendation details the development contractor's recommendations for the designation of items as CIs in the contract work breakdown structure and its extensions, and types of configuration documentation to be used to identify the configuration of CIs. The purpose of the data is to facilitate program management by further decomposition of the system architecture into logical components that will enhance systems engineering, integrated logistics support, and configuration management efforts.
