It had been repeatedly demonstrated that VO2 / VOX as the resistive material has superior characteristics to any other presently used thermal sensing element suitable for an imaging array (especially w.r.t. 1/f noise). Exploiting the ultimate performance capability of uncooled imagers will allow several missions to adopt this technology rather than having to resort to expensive and
ressources-extensive cryogenic photon detectors.
There is no European source of such technology, until the recent close collaboration between XenICs (B) for the ROIC and INO (CND), the Canadian manufacturer of VO2 / VOX micro-bolometer detectors. In view of this consortium, it is of extremely high interest to develop a detector for space, taking advantage of the consortium's business plan to provide devices for airborne and terrestrial markets.
