An engineering plan is prepared:
• to communicate the work plan
• to communicate engineering process requirements to all technical team members - direction & guidance
• to communicate engineering management requirements to all technical team members
• to provide a focus for the integration of engineering specialties
• sometimes in response to RFT or contract requirements. An engineering plan is often called for as a tender or contract deliverable for evaluation and assurance purposes
Pitalls in engineering plans:
• incorporating a level of detail excessive in relation to the maturity of requirements analysis and system design
• incorporating too little detail to satisfy the purpose of the engineering plan
• duplicating rather than referencing existing plans and procedures
• preparing a plan for cosmetic purposes
• not maintaining the engineering plan
