Process Model Installation Instructions and Notes About the Process Model: The Systems Engineering Process Model was primarily developed by Mr. Alberto Ortiz, McDonnell Douglas Corporation - Douglas Aircraft Company, as a subcontractor to Software Productivity Solutions (SPS), under the contract titled System Engineering Concept Demonstration (SECD). SECD was sponsored by Rome Laboratory, Griffiss Air Force Base, NY, contract number F30602-90-C-0021. The Systems Engineering Process Model was derived by synthesizing numerous government standards (identified at the first level of the model). Because there are conflicts amongst these standards and because the model represents our interpretation of these standards, SPS cannot guarantee the validity of this model. The Process Model, when expanded, is a self contained application/document. The application used to create the Process Model was MacFlow 3.5.4. The executable version of Process Model was generated by MicroMacFlow 1.0.2. MicroMacFlow allows you to read, navigate, and print the Process Model, but the Process Model can not be edited. No license is required to expand and run the Process Model. This disk contains three files. READ ME FIRST (which is a text file of these instructions), TeachText (which is an application to pen the READ ME FIRST) and PROCESS MODEL VER. 10.SEA, which is a self extracting DiskDoubler file that contains the Process Model. Machine Requirements: The Process Model requires a Macintosh with a minimum of 3MB of free RAM to run. The expanded file will occupy about 2.5 MB of disk space. A model IIcx or larger is recommended. A two page monitor is also recommended, though not required. Installation Instructions: 1) Insert Disk containing the compressed version of the Systems Engineering Process Model. 2) Copy the contents of the disk into a destination folder on your hard disk. (DO NOT TRY TO EXPAND THE PROCESS MODEL ONTO THIS DISKETTE OR ANY OTHER DISKETTE BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH ROOM!!!) 3) Navigate to the destination folder and double click on the compressed file PROCESS MODEL VER. 10.SEA to expand it. 4) Now, double click on the Process Model icon in the destination folder to run the Process Model. * IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTE: If you install the Process Model into a folder that is open you might need to close the folder then reopen it in order for the program to run. Loading the Process Model: The Process Model is loaded by simply double clicking on the Process Model icon. On a Macintosh IIfx, the Process Model takes about 1 minute to load; on lesser machines, you can expect a longer delay. Help: A Help facility that describes the symbology used in the Process Model is available by double clicking on the shadowed portion of the Help button. The Help button is immediately visible on the first screen displayed upon initially executing the Process Model. Navigating the Process Model: The MacFlow application used for the Systems Engineering Process Model operates in one of three modes: ¥ Shadow Zoom (used to navigate to lower levels of the model) ¥ Shadow Comment (used to display comments about the selected icon) ¥ Shadow Launch (not used in this model) Selecting the mode is accomplished from the Symbols menu in the menu bar. The Process Model is initially in the Shadow Zoom mode. The Process Model is hierarchically organized, as depicted in the Figure below. When the Process Model is loaded, you will be at its topmost level. You can navigate through the different levels of the Process Model by double clicking on the borders of boxes that have shadow groupings. On the first (the topmost) level of the Process Model you can double click on the borders of the box that surrounds all of the phases of the Process Model. Double clicking on the border of that box will navigate to display the second level. On the second level, there are seven of these boxes surrounding each of the major phases of the Process Model, (i.e. Determination of Mission Needs, Phase 0, Demonstration and Validation, ...). Double clicking on the border of any of these boxes will navigate to display the third level for the selected phase. Once at the third level or lower levels, double clicking on the individual process boxes will display the lower levels. To move back up the levels of the Process Model, click on the close box of the window that displays the level that you want to leave. Displaying the Process Model Comments: The model has comments through level 3 that references the source document of the various processes and work products. To display these comments, select Shadow Comment in the Symbols menu bar. Double click on the desired shadowed icon to display a window of commentary. Click on the close box of the window when done. * IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember to reset the mode to Shadow Zoom to continue to navigate. Performance: Because the Process Model is so extensive, navigating the Process Model may be slow. Moving down the levels of the Process Model can be slow, but going up the levels is relatively fast.
