Introduction
Industrial software engineering environments are almost always under strong pressure to meet calendar deadlines. The pressure can be so intense as to tempt software professionals to follow inappropriate software practices, often resulting in poor product quality, and even greater delays in getting satisfactory products to the market. This chapter reviews, with occasional deliberate irreverence, a number of practical strategies for dealing with this problem. The solutions are common sense, political and technical in nature. They involve quantification to define the real problem, evolutionary delivery and the inspection method to correct process failures using early feedback. Ten guiding principles summarize the chapter.
