Over the years, several SDM theses have studied new product development (NPD). These previous works have used the design structure matrix method to analyze the relationships between organizational structures, product architectures and developmental sequencing. This work in contrast, examines the NPD organization from a higher level of abstraction and is the first to conduct research on the influences of the system engineering organizational architecture in its entirety on new product development endeavors. This
analysis of systems engineering deployment and its influence on the NPD organization provides unique insight into engineering and management structures and concepts used to define and manage complex product development efforts.
